Myths & Legends

We are beginning to document the rich and varied myths of Ellandria’s clans. These will eventually become their own series, called The Legends of Ellandria. This is a work in progress.

Here are a few of the myths mentioned in the books so far:

The House of Wind:
Skugga Draig:
Shadow Dragons, believed to be the dreams of dragons made manifest
Leviathans: Believed to slumber in the depth of Mordù Geil, the Sea of Despair, waiting to be awakened by the haunting call of storm sirens.
The Black Mountains: “Legend has it they were forged in the fires of the first sun, their peaks home to winged serpents and shadow dragons. And that the first kyennard was born in a cave high in those peaks, nursed by the wind itself.” (Source: Aelred)
Creag Àrdsgèith: A majestic spire that pierces the clouds, its windswept face smooth as polished obsidian. My father, Memnes told Hugh and I stories of this sacred place. How the first wind walkers discovered their powers by hurling themselves from its heights in acts of desperate faith. Those who survived learned to ride the fierce thermal currents that spiraled around the peak like invisible serpents. Even now, young storm shifters made pilgrimages to test their mettle against its deadly winds, though few dare attempt the legendary leap. (Cut from Star Crossed, we ran out of room, but will revisit in the future!)

The House of Fire:
Tennelasair: the Eternal Flame, a shard of the sun that the fire god, Rynne, gifted to his secret bride, the moon goddess, Nyx, as a symbol of his everlasting love.
Phoenixes– there are many legends surrounding the rare phoenixes in this house. One says that Maeve, the first phoenix, was born out of the mouth of a dragon. My beloved Aislinn, also a phoenix, says this story is poppycock, but fun nonetheless.

The House of Stone:
The Legend of Lia and K’Shel
– believed to be the Great Mother and Great Father of Clann Càirn. Lia was a tree nymph and K’shel was the spirit of a mountain who begged the goddess to give him one lifetime as an Aefraen (an Ellandrian Super) to care for and love Lia. Their children are the stone singers.
Eris– Believed to be the consort of the Goddess Ellandria, the moon is named after him.
Tears of the Goddess: When her husband and mate, Eris, turned two of their children into stone, the Goddess wept these stones from the heavens, said to contain their forbidden powers. They are:
The Dinaz Clach: a glowing crystal rumored to amplify powers.
The Naz Clach: a glowing stone that binds powers, once mined on Eris, and used in the prison of Ezduril to contain those with dangerous powers.
The Harmonizing Stone– a mythical, magical stone, believed to pull all things into balance, including opposing powers
